Who maintains this site

Car Sales Tax Calculator is built and maintained by a six-person team, led by Michael Steve. The work is split by task rather than by state, so the same process applies to every page: research, then writing, then engineering, then testing, then correction, with Michael reviewing changes before they go live.

Meet the team

  • Michael Steve, lead. Sets the editorial and data standards, and reviews changes before they publish. See our methodology and quality standards for the bar every change is held to, or GitHub for sample projects.
  • Alex, engineering. Builds and maintains the calculators' code, so each one applies a state's rules correctly.
  • Jordan, research. Researches each state's sales tax, title and registration rules directly from official sources: a revenue department, a motor vehicle agency, or the state's own statute.
  • Chris, content. Writes the page that explains each state's rules, from the same data Jordan verifies and Alex's calculator reads.
  • Eric, QA. Tests the calculators against hand-worked examples, including edge cases like tax caps, minimum taxes and trade-in exceptions, before a state goes live.
  • Madelynne, corrections. Reviews reader-reported errors against an official source and keeps state data current after a report comes in.

What the team does not do

  • Does not publish a number that can't be confirmed. See the methodology for what counts as a source and what happens when one isn't available.
  • Does not accept payment to rank, favor or feature a state, lender or dealer differently in a calculator's output.
  • Does not give personalized tax, legal or financial advice. See the disclaimer for what this site is and isn't.
