How this estimate was calculated

Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.

    Estimated Utah Car Sales Tax

    Local taxVaries by location
    Trade-inLowers taxable price
Dealer feeTaxed with the price; limit not confirmed

Utah's state sales and use tax rate is 4.85%, which comes to $1,212.50 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in.

Cities and counties add their own local option and county option taxes on top, so your combined rate depends on where you register the vehicle; combined rates run from about 5.95% up to 8% or more depending on locality.

A trade-in lowers the taxable price only when it is a vehicle-for-vehicle trade completed in the same transaction and documented together; other trades are valued and taxed rather than credited.

Utah Car Title and Registration Fees

A new Utah title costs $6. Registration also carries an age-based uniform fee (and, for some vehicle types, a 1.5% fee in lieu of property tax), so we have not added a flat registration figure; use the DMV's fee estimator, then enter your own amount under Advanced options.

How Utah Car Sales Tax Is Calculated

    1. Start with the purchase price.
    2. Subtract your trade-in value, if it is a vehicle-to-vehicle trade completed in the same transaction.
    3. Multiply the result by the state rate of 4.85%.
    4. Add your local sales tax rate for the city or county where you register the vehicle.
    5. Add the $6 title fee and your registration fee (from the DMV's fee estimator) to reach your out-the-door price.

Loan payoffs and other cash consideration you give as part of the deal count toward the taxable price, the same as the negotiated purchase price.

Utah's registration fees are set by the vehicle's age rather than its price, so check the DMV's Fee Estimator for your figure and enter it under Advanced options. Read how a trade-in affects sales tax to see how Utah's vehicle-to-vehicle trade rule compares with other states.
