Car Sales Tax Calculator

Car sales tax calculator for new and used vehicles: enter the price, your trade-in and your state, and see the sales tax, fees and out-the-door price in one clear estimate. The price on the window is only where the bill starts. Sales tax, title, registration and the dealer's documentation fee are added on top, and a trade-in comes off, so what you actually pay can be thousands of dollars away from the sticker.

This calculator uses tax rates and vehicle fees that we checked against official state sources. Every state page explains the rate, the trade-in rule and the fees behind the estimate. The rules differ more than most buyers expect. California taxes the full price even when you trade in a car, Virginia charges a minimum tax of $75, and Tennessee limits local tax to the first $1,600 of the price.

How to Calculate Sales Tax on a Car

Car sales tax is the taxable amount times your tax rate. In most states the taxable amount is the price minus your trade-in, and the rate is the state rate plus any local tax. A sales tax on car calculator does that math for you, and this one applies the rules of the state you choose.

If you were looking for a sales tax calculator for a car, the steps are short. Pick your state, enter the vehicle price and your trade-in, and add your local rate if your state charges one. Open Advanced options to add a down payment, APR and loan term for a monthly payment.

    How It Works

    1. Enter vehicle details

Add the price, your trade-in and whether the car is new or used.

    2. Choose your location

Pick your state. Add a ZIP code and your local tax rate where your state charges one.

    3. See your estimated cost

Get the out-the-door price with every line shown, and a plain-English explanation of how we got there.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax on a car?

Multiply the taxable amount by your tax rate. The taxable amount is usually the vehicle price minus your trade-in, though a few states, such as California and Virginia, do not subtract the trade-in. The rate is the state rate plus any city, county or district tax. A car sales tax calculator applies each state's rules for you, and our guide on how car sales tax is calculated walks through a worked example.

How much is sales tax on a car?

It depends on your state and, in many states, your local rate. On a $25,000 car with no trade-in, state sales tax is $1,562.50 in Texas (6.25%) and $1,037.50 in Virginia (4.15%). Many states add local tax on top, so enter your state and local rate in the calculator for your own number.

Is there a sales tax for car calculator that uses my state's rules?

Yes. Choose your state in the calculator above. Each state we cover has its own page with the rate, the trade-in rule, and the title and registration fees we could confirm. Start from the state directory.

Does the sales tax car calculator work for new and used cars?

Yes. Switch between New and Used above. The tax rate is usually the same for both, but a few rules depend on it: Ohio lowers the tax for a trade-in only on a new vehicle, and Arizona's first-year vehicle license tax is based on the MSRP of a new vehicle. For more detail see the new car sales tax calculator and the used car sales tax calculator.

Is sales tax charged before or after a trade-in?

Most of the states we cover charge tax after the trade-in is subtracted. California and Virginia charge tax on the full price. Ohio subtract a trade-in only on a new vehicle. Read more in how a trade-in affects sales tax.

Can I include title and registration fees in the estimate?

Yes. The result lists the title and registration fees we have confirmed for your state, and lets you type in your own amounts. To see them next to the tax, use the car sales tax and registration calculator or the car sales tax and title fees calculator.

Can I calculate a car loan payment with sales tax and a trade-in?

Yes. Open Advanced options above and add a down payment, APR and loan term for a quick monthly payment with tax and fees included. For more control, use the car loan calculator with sales tax or the car loan calculator with trade-in and sales tax, which also lets you enter what you still owe on your trade-in.

What is included in an out-the-door price?

The vehicle price, sales tax, title and registration fees, and the dealer's documentation fee, plus any add-ons, minus your trade-in. Interest on a loan is not included. See what an out-the-door price is.

Do I pay sales tax where I buy the car or where I live?

It depends on the state, but local tax often follows where you live or register the car rather than where the dealership is. New York taxes a vehicle at the rate where the buyer lives, Arkansas and Florida use the address on the registration or title, and California applies district taxes based on where the vehicle will be registered.

Is the dealer documentation fee taxed?

It depends on the state. Texas does not tax a documentary fee that is stated separately on the invoice, while Virginia includes the dealer processing fee in the price it taxes. In states where we have not confirmed the rule, the calculator does not add tax to the fee. See the dealer documentation fee guide.

How accurate is the estimate, and why are some fees not included?

It is as accurate as the numbers you enter and the data behind them. Local tax rates, county fees and vehicle-specific charges can change the final amount, so use the result to check a dealer quote, and get final figures from your state and your dealer.

We only include a tax rate or fee when we can confirm it from an official source. When we cannot, the calculator says so and lets you enter your own amount, instead of guessing and making the total look more certain than it is.
