How this estimate was calculated

Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.

Financing the tax has a price

If you roll sales tax and fees into the loan, you pay interest on them for as long as the loan lasts. Financing $1,500 of tax at 6% over 60 months adds about $240 in interest on top of the tax itself.

Tick or untick the box that rolls tax and fees into the loan. When you leave them out, the calculator shows how much you would need to pay at signing instead, so you can compare the two.

    What to compare

    • Monthly payment. Usually lower when tax and fees are financed.
    • Total interest. Higher when tax and fees are financed.
    • Cash due at signing. Higher when you pay tax and fees yourself.

The right choice depends on your cash and on the APR. If you can pay the tax without touching an emergency fund, it is often cheaper over the life of the loan.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I roll sales tax into a car loan?

Many lenders allow it, as long as the total stays within what they will lend against the vehicle. Ask your lender before you assume it.

Does financing the tax change the tax owed?

No. The tax is the same either way. Financing only changes how much interest you pay over time.
