Florida charges 6% state sales tax on a vehicle, or $1,500.00 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in. Tax is charged on the difference between the sale price and the trade-in allowance.

Most counties add a discretionary surtax of 0.5% to 2.5%, and a few add none. It is based on the county in the address on your registration or title, not on where the dealership sits.

The surtax applies to only the first $5,000 of the price, so a more expensive car does not pay more surtax.

Florida Car Title and Registration Fees

Florida's $225 initial registration fee is included because it is charged on the first Florida registration of a vehicle. We have not added a title fee or the weight-based base registration fee, so the total leaves them out unless you enter your own amounts.

How Florida Car Sales Tax Is Calculated

    1. Start with the sale price.
    2. Subtract the trade-in allowance.
    3. Multiply the result by the state rate of 6%.
    4. Add the county surtax: your county's rate applied to the first $5,000 of the taxable amount only.
    5. Add the $225 initial registration fee, unless you transfer a plate, and any title, registration or dealer fees you know.

The surtax is based on the county in the address on the registration or title, not where the dealership is.

If you carry over a plate from a vehicle you owned, the $225 initial registration fee may not apply. Enter your own registration amount under Advanced options if so.

Carrying a plate over from a vehicle you already own? The $225 may not apply, so enter your own registration amount under Advanced options. We have not confirmed a Florida limit on dealer fees, so check each line on the buyer's order. To compare trade-in rules, read how a trade-in affects sales tax.
