Why we built this
A car's sticker price is only the starting point. Sales tax, title fees, registration and the dealer's own documentation fee all stack on top of it, and every state works them out differently. Some states tax the price after your trade-in; others tax the full amount regardless. Some cap what a dealer can charge for paperwork; most don't say. None of that is on the sticker, and a dealer's quote often doesn't break it down until you're already at the table.
Car Sales Tax Calculator exists to work out that total before you get there, using the rule for your state rather than a national average, so you can walk in knowing roughly what you'll owe and compare it against what you're quoted.
How it works
Enter the vehicle price, your trade-in value and your state, and the calculator applies that state's sales tax rate, its trade-in rule and any local tax, then adds the title and registration fees we've confirmed for it. Every step is shown, so you can see how the total was reached rather than just the number at the end. Separate calculators handle a used or new car, a loan payment, and title or registration fees on their own, for whichever question you're actually asking.
How we verify the data
Every rate, rule and fee comes from an official source: a state revenue department, a motor vehicle agency or the state statute itself, not from an average of other sites.
- Each figure is tied to the specific official page or document it came from.
- Rates, rules and fees live in structured data files, separate from the site's design, so a figure can be corrected without touching how a page looks.
- When we can't confirm a figure, we don't guess at one. The calculator marks it as not included and lets you enter your own amount instead.
What "not included" means
A few fees, usually registration charges that depend on a vehicle's weight or a county's own schedule, aren't confirmed yet for every state we cover. Rather than show a number we can't stand behind, the calculator leaves it out of the total and says so, instead of guessing. Every result is an estimate to check a quote against, not a bill, and the final figures come from your state and your dealer. See the disclaimer for the full picture.

We add a state only after checking its rate, trade-in rule and fees against an official source, which is why the site covers a growing list rather than all fifty at once. See the state directory for what's available now.
Corrections
Tax and fee rules change, and we don't always catch it the moment they do. If something on the site is out of date, contact us with a link to the official source and we'll fix it.
