Arizona calls its sales tax the transaction privilege tax, and on a vehicle the state's share is 5.6%. On a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in that comes to $1,400.00 before any county or city tax.

County and city taxes are added on top and depend on where you are, so the calculator asks for your combined local rate. Arizona lets you subtract the trade-in allowance shown on the purchase invoice before tax is calculated.

The larger surprise comes at registration. On a newly registered vehicle the vehicle license tax is $2.80 for each $100 of assessed value, and the assessed value is 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price, so for that tax the MSRP counts, not the price you negotiated.

Arizona Car Title and Registration Fees

Registration is $8 for a motor vehicle. The first-year vehicle license tax is added for new vehicles only, using the MSRP you enter. We have not added a title fee or the used-vehicle license tax, so the total leaves them out unless you type your own amounts under Advanced options.

How Arizona Car Sales Tax Is Calculated

    1. Take the price from your purchase invoice.
    2. Subtract the trade-in allowance shown on that invoice.
    3. Multiply the result by the state rate of 5.6%.
    4. Add county and city tax by multiplying by your combined local rate.
    5. On a new vehicle, add the vehicle license tax: $2.80 per $100 of assessed value, which is 60% of the MSRP.
    6. Add the $8 registration fee and any dealer fee to reach your out-the-door price.

The vehicle license tax is separate from sales tax. For a newly registered vehicle it is $2.80 per $100 of assessed value. Enter the MSRP under Advanced options for the closest estimate.

Buying new? Enter the MSRP under Advanced options so the license tax is close, and try the new car sales tax calculator. Buying used, the used car sales tax calculator leaves the license tax out. For how Arizona's trade-in rule compares with other states, read how a trade-in affects sales tax.
