    Dealer feeTaxed with the price

Virginia collects a 4.15% motor vehicle sales and use tax when the vehicle is titled, with a minimum of $75. On a $25,000 purchase that comes to $1,037.50.

The tax is charged on the gross sales price, which is the cost of the vehicle after rebates or incentives are applied. A credit for a trade-in does not reduce it, which is the main difference from most states.

The dealer processing fee is included in the price the tax is charged on, and we have not confirmed a dollar limit on it. There is a single statewide rate, so there is no local rate to enter.

Virginia Car Title and Registration Fees

The DMV charges $15 for an original or replacement title. Virginia registration depends on the vehicle's weight, so it is left out unless you enter the amount from the DMV's fee calculator under Advanced options.

How Virginia Car Sales Tax Is Calculated

    1. Start with the gross sales price after any rebates or incentives, plus the dealer processing fee.
    2. Do not subtract your trade-in. Virginia does not credit it.
    3. Multiply the result by the state rate of 4.15%.
    4. If the result is under $75, the tax is $75.
    5. Add the $15 title fee and any registration fee you enter to reach your out-the-door price.

Enter the price after any rebates or incentives that are applied to it, because Virginia taxes the price after they are applied.

If the vehicle is under five years old and the price is not within $1,500 of its current trade-in value in the NADA guide, the DMV asks for an affidavit (form SUT-1A) when you title it.

Because the dealer fee is taxed here, enter it in the dealer fee field so it is added to the taxable price. Read how a trade-in affects sales tax for the states that do credit a trade-in.
