Oregon Car Sales Tax Calculator
Oregon does not have a sales tax. In its place, the Oregon car sales tax calculator applies the state's 0.5% vehicle privilege or use tax to the full retail price, since Oregon does not subtract a trade-in from that price. Enter your numbers to see the estimate.

How this estimate was calculated
Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.
Estimated Oregon Car Sales Tax
Oregon has no general sales tax, and none on vehicles either. Instead it charges a 0.5% vehicle privilege tax on dealer sales (called a use tax when you buy from an out-of-state or private seller), which comes to $125.00 on a $25,000 purchase.
Unlike a sales tax, this is charged on the full retail price: Oregon's own guidance says cash down payments and trade-ins are not included in, meaning not subtracted from, the retail sales price calculation.
The tax applies to vehicles purchased new or with under 7,500 miles, that have never been registered in Oregon before, and weigh 26,000 pounds or less. There is no city or county add-on.
Oregon Car Title and Registration Fees
Oregon's title fee runs $101 to $116 depending on the vehicle's fuel economy rating (electric vehicles are $192), and registration runs $126 to $216 depending on MPG. This calculator uses the higher end of each range; check the DMV's fee table for your vehicle's exact rate.
| Fee | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Title feeTitle | $101–$116 | $101–$116 depending on the vehicle's MPG rating ($192 for an electric vehicle). The estimate uses the higher amount. |
| Registration feeRegistration | $126–$216 | $126–$216 depending on the vehicle's MPG rating. The estimate uses the higher amount. |

How Oregon Car Sales Tax Is Calculated
- Start with the retail price. Oregon does not subtract a trade-in or a cash down payment from this base.
- Multiply the price by the tax rate of 0.5%.
- Add the title fee ($101–$116 by MPG rating) and the registration fee ($126–$216 by MPG rating) to reach your out-the-door price.
If you buy from a dealer outside Oregon, you owe the Vehicle Use Tax instead, and must pay it within 30 days of purchase and get a certificate before the DMV will register the vehicle.
The tax only applies to a vehicle purchased new or with fewer than 7,500 miles that has never been registered in Oregon before; other used-vehicle purchases are not subject to it.
Because Oregon's title and registration fees are set by your vehicle's fuel economy rather than a flat number, check the DMV's title and registration fee tables for your exact MPG bracket. Read how a trade-in affects sales tax to see how Oregon's no-trade-in-credit rule compares with other states.
Example Oregon Car Sales Tax Calculation
The $5,000 trade-in here does not lower the tax, since Oregon's privilege tax is charged on the full retail price.
| Vehicle price | $25,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Trade-in | −$5,000.00 |
| Taxable amount | $25,000.00 |
| Vehicle privilege/use tax (0.5%) | $125.00 |
| Title fee | $116.00 |
| Registration fee | $216.00 |
| Estimated total | $20,457.00 |
