How this estimate was calculated
Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.
Estimated Arkansas Car Sales Tax
Arkansas charges 6.5% state sales tax on a vehicle, which is $1,625.00 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in.
Local tax is where Arkansas differs from most states. City and county tax is based on the location on your registration and title application, but it is limited to $25 for each 1% of local tax, so in practice local tax applies to only the first $2,500 of the taxable amount.
Tax is computed on the total consideration minus your trade-in credit. If the vehicle's total price is under $2,500, no sales or use tax is due at all.
Arkansas Car Title and Registration Fees
Arkansas lists a $10 title fee from the Department of Finance and Administration. Passenger registration depends on the vehicle's weight and the DFA publishes a fee schedule, so it is left out of the total until you enter it under Advanced options.
| Fee | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Title feeTitle | $10.00 | Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration title fee. |
| Registration feeRegistration | Varies | Passenger vehicle registration depends on the vehicle's weight. The DFA publishes a fee schedule. Enter your amount under Advanced options. |
| Dealer documentation feeSet by the dealer | Up to $129 | Arkansas Code section 23-112-317 sets the dealer service and handling fee at no more than $129. Dealers must charge it the same way to all retail customers and state on the documents that it is not an official fee. |
How Arkansas Car Sales Tax Is Calculated
- If the total price is under $2,500, stop here: no sales or use tax is due.
- Otherwise start with the total consideration on your invoice.
- Subtract your trade-in credit.
- Multiply the result by the state rate of 6.5%.
- Add local tax by multiplying your combined local rate by the first $2,500 of the taxable amount only.
- Add the $10 title fee and any registration and dealer fees you know to reach your out-the-door price.
If the vehicle's total price is under $2,500, no sales or use tax is due.
Local tax is limited to $25 for each 1% of local tax, which works out to local tax on the first $2,500 of the taxable amount. The calculator applies that cap.
The calculator uses the 6.5% state rate. Texarkana residents pay a 7% rate, so treat the result as a slight underestimate if you live there.
Dealer fees have a ceiling here. Arkansas Code section 23-112-317 sets the dealer service and handling fee at no more than $129, and dealers must charge it the same way to all retail customers, so a higher line on your buyer's order is worth asking about.
