Nebraska's state sales tax on a vehicle is 5.5%, or $1,375.00 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in.

Tax is computed on the difference between the sales price and the trade-in allowance for another motor vehicle, and rebates reduce the tax base too.

Which local rate applies depends on delivery. If you take the vehicle at the seller's location, the seller's local rate applies, and if it is delivered elsewhere, the delivery location's rate applies. The county treasurer collects the tax when you register.

Nebraska Car Title and Registration Fees

The certificate of title fee is $10, paid to the county treasurer with the title application. Registration is also set by the county treasurer and taxes depend on the vehicle, so those amounts are left out until you enter them. The DMV's Vehicle Tax Estimator can give you the figure.

How Nebraska Car Sales Tax Is Calculated

    1. Start with the sales price, after any rebate.
    2. Subtract the trade-in allowance for another motor vehicle.
    3. Multiply the result by the state rate of 5.5%.
    4. Add the local rate for the seller's location, or the delivery location if the vehicle is delivered.
    5. Add the $10 title fee and any registration and dealer fees you know.

You must register the vehicle and pay the sales tax within 30 days of the purchase date. Title fees a dealer pays to public officials for you are not part of the sales price used for tax.

We have not confirmed a Nebraska limit on dealer documentary fees, so check each line on the buyer's order. To see how Nebraska's trade-in rule compares with other states, read how a trade-in affects sales tax.
