How this estimate was calculated
Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.
Estimated New Jersey Car Sales Tax
New Jersey charges 6.625% on a new or used vehicle, or $1,656.25 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in, and there is no local tax on top.
A trade-in lowers the taxable amount, so its value comes off before the rate is applied.
New passenger cars priced at $45,000 or more also carry a one-time 0.4% surcharge from the Motor Vehicle Commission, calculated on the full price before the trade-in.
Leasing instead of buying? New Jersey also applies sales tax to a motor vehicle lease, and the lessor collects it from you on each monthly payment. This calculator covers purchases, so it does not estimate a lease payment.
New Jersey Car Title and Registration Fees
The title fee is $60, or $85 if the vehicle has a lienholder, for example when it is financed. The estimate uses $60. The luxury surcharge is added when the price test is met. We have not added a verified registration total, so it is left out unless you enter it.

How New Jersey Car Sales Tax Is Calculated
- Start with the purchase price.
- Subtract the value of your trade-in.
- Multiply the result by the state rate of 6.625%.
- On a new car priced at $45,000 or more, add 0.4% of the full price before the trade-in.
- Add the title fee ($60, or $85 with a lienholder) and any registration and dealer fees.
The surcharge also applies to new cars rated under 19 miles per gallon, whatever the price. This calculator only checks the $45,000 price test, so it can miss that case.
Financing the car? The $85 title fee applies when there is a lienholder, so enter it under Advanced options for a closer total, and use the car payment calculator with sales tax to see the monthly cost with tax included.
Example New Jersey Car Sales Tax Calculation
This example is a new car priced above $45,000, so the 0.4% surcharge applies to the full $50,000, before the trade-in.
