Georgia Car Sales Tax Calculator
The Georgia car sales tax calculator applies the state's 7% Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT), a one-time tax paid when the vehicle is titled instead of a traditional sales tax. TAVT is based on the vehicle's fair market value, which can be higher than your negotiated price. Enter your numbers to see the estimate.

Estimated Georgia Car Sales Tax
Georgia does not charge a traditional sales tax on vehicles. Instead it collects a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) of 7% when the vehicle is titled, which is $1,750.00 on a $25,000 fair market value with no trade-in. TAVT replaces both the old sales tax and the old annual ad valorem (property) tax on vehicles.
The tax is based on the vehicle's fair market value, not always the price on your bill of sale: the Department of Revenue uses the greater of your sale price or the value in its own motor vehicle assessment manual. A trade-in and any dealer rebate lower that fair market value, but only on a dealer sale, not a private-party sale.
TAVT is paid once, at titling, and it is the same 7% rate everywhere in the state; there is no separate city or county rate to look up.
Georgia Car Title and Registration Fees
A Georgia title costs $18, and the standard annual tag (license plate) fee is $20. TAVT is collected once at titling; the $20 tag fee then repeats every year at renewal.
| Fee | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Title feeTitle | $18.00 | The standard fee to apply for a Georgia title. |
| Annual tag feeRegistration | $20.00 | The standard annual license plate (tag) fee for a regular passenger vehicle. |
| Dealer documentation feeSet by the dealer | Varies | TAVT is based on the fair market value of the vehicle itself, and we have not found the dealer documentary fee included in that base or a state-set dollar cap on it. |
How Georgia Car Sales Tax Is Calculated
- Start with the fair market value: the greater of your purchase price or the value in Georgia's own motor vehicle assessment manual.
- Subtract your trade-in and any dealer rebate, if the sale is from a dealer.
- Multiply the result by the TAVT rate of 7%.
- Add the $18 title fee and the $20 tag fee to reach your out-the-door price.
TAVT is calculated with Georgia's own Motor Vehicle Assessment Manual value, not just your negotiated price, so a low sale price does not always lower the tax the way it would under an ordinary sales tax.
New Georgia residents titling a vehicle they already owned pay a reduced 3% TAVT rate instead of 7%, and family transfers can qualify for a 0.5% rate.
Because TAVT can use a state-assessed value instead of your price, the number here is an estimate: check Georgia's own TAVT calculator with your VIN for the exact figure the county tag office will charge. Read how a trade-in affects sales tax to see how Georgia's trade-in rule compares with states that charge an ordinary sales tax.
Example Georgia Car Sales Tax Calculation
This example assumes the fair market value matches the $25,000 price; Georgia's own assessment manual could set a different value for your specific vehicle.
| Vehicle price | $25,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Trade-in | −$5,000.00 |
| Taxable amount | $20,000.00 |
| Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) (7%) | $1,400.00 |
| Title fee | $18.00 |
| Registration fee | $20.00 |
| Estimated total | $21,438.00 |

Frequently Asked Questions About Georgia Car Sales Tax
What is the car sales tax rate in Georgia?
Georgia does not charge a sales tax on vehicles. Instead it charges a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) of 7% of the vehicle's fair market value, paid when the car is titled.
Does a trade-in reduce Georgia's TAVT?
Yes, on a dealer sale. The fair market value is reduced by the trade-in value and by any dealer rebate before TAVT is calculated. A trade-in does not reduce TAVT on a private-party sale.
Is TAVT based on the price I paid or a state value?
Whichever is higher. The Department of Revenue uses the greater of the price on your bill of sale or the value listed in its own Motor Vehicle Assessment Manual.
How much is the title fee in Georgia?
The title fee is $18. The standard annual tag (license plate) fee is $20, charged once at first registration and then again at each yearly renewal.
