How this estimate was calculated

Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.

Why the payment is higher than the price suggests

A payment calculator that only uses the vehicle price leaves out the tax and fees that sit on top of it. Those can add up to several percent of the price, and when they are rolled into the loan you pay interest on them too.

This calculator adds sales tax, title, registration and dealer fees first, subtracts your down payment and trade-in, and then works out the payment for the amount left.

    How the payment is calculated

The monthly payment is a standard amortized loan payment: the amount financed, the APR divided by twelve, and the number of months. With a 0% APR the amount financed is split evenly across the months.

Every $1,000 you finance at 6% for 60 months costs about $19 a month. That is a quick way to see what a bigger down payment or a lower tax bill is worth.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is sales tax included in the car payment?

Only if it is financed. When tax and fees are rolled into the loan, they are part of the amount financed and earn interest. If you pay them up front, the payment is smaller.

Does a down payment reduce sales tax?

No. Sales tax is based on the price and your trade-in, not on how you pay. A down payment lowers the amount you finance.

Is the payment quoted by the dealer the same as this estimate?

Not necessarily. Dealer quotes can include add-ons, a different fee total or a different APR. Ask for the out-the-door price and compare.
