How this estimate was calculated
Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.
Estimated Ohio Car Sales Tax
Ohio charges 5.75% state sales tax on a vehicle, or $1,437.50 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in, plus tax at your county's rate.
County tables list a combined rate from 7.05% to 8.0%, and the tax is charged at the rate in your county of residence. Enter the county part, which is the combined rate minus 5.75%.
A trade-in lowers the taxable price only when you buy a new vehicle from a dealer. On a used vehicle it does not, and manufacturer rebates and cash down payments do not reduce the price on either.
Ohio Car Title and Registration Fees
Ohio's title fee is $18 statewide, though some counties charge $23 when local officials approve an added charge. The estimate uses $18. We have not added a verified registration total, so it is left out unless you enter it under Advanced options.

- Multiply the result by the state rate of 5.75%.
- Add your county's part of the rate.
- Add the $18 title fee and any registration and dealer fees.
Sales tax is paid to the clerk of courts at the rate for your county of residence when you title the vehicle.
Ohio Revised Code 4517.261 says a documentary service charge may not exceed the lesser of the amount allowed in a retail installment sale, as adjusted, and 10% of the amount the buyer must pay under the contract.
