Estimated Minnesota Car Sales Tax
Minnesota's motor vehicle sales tax is 6.875%, or $1,718.75 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in, and local sales tax does not apply to vehicles.
The tax is worked out after subtracting rebates and the trade-in allowance from the vehicle sales price. A trade-in with a licensed dealer lowers it.
On a new vehicle Minnesota adds a first-year registration tax of $10 plus 1.285% of the MSRP, for a vehicle first registered in Minnesota on or after November 16, 2020. On a used vehicle the tax follows a schedule based on the vehicle's age.
Minnesota Car Title and Registration Fees
The calculator adds the $10 base registration tax and, for a new vehicle, 1.285% of the MSRP. The used-vehicle registration tax and the title fee are left out until you enter them under Advanced options, where you can also enter the MSRP for the closest figure.
