How this estimate was calculated
Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.
Title, registration and license are not the same fee
The title proves you own the car and is usually a one-time fee charged when you put it in your name. Registration lets you drive it on public roads, and in most states that's billed on a recurring schedule, every one or two years, sometimes called a license fee or tag fee. Sales tax is the one-time percentage of the price. This calculator keeps the three apart so you can see what each one actually costs.
Registration is the hardest of the three to pin down: a flat fee in one state, a charge by horsepower or weight in another, and in some states a percentage of the vehicle's value. That's why this calculator lets you type in your own registration amount when we don't have a verified figure.
How to get an exact total
- Use the state agency's own fee calculator when it has one. Each state page links to the agency we used.
- Ask the dealer for the title and registration line on the buyer's order, and compare it with the state's published fee.
- Enter the amounts you confirm under Advanced options, so the total reflects your real numbers instead of our estimate.
When a fee depends on value or a deadline
Deadlines matter for the title: California expects a transfer within 10 days of the sale, and Missouri charges a $25 penalty for every 30 days a title application is late, up to $200. Registration can depend on value too: California's vehicle license fee is 0.65% of the vehicle's value, and Minnesota charges $10 plus 1.575% of MSRP on a new vehicle. Your state page lists the rule we've confirmed for both fees.

Title fees by state
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "tax, title and license" actually mean?
Tax is the one-time sales tax on the price. Title is the one-time fee to put the car in your name. License, which most people mean as registration, is what lets you drive it on public roads, usually billed every year or two. This calculator shows all three.
Is registration the same as the license fee?
Usually, yes. Most states use "registration" and "license fee" (or "tag fee") for the same charge; a few states split it into a base fee plus an add-on.
How much is a car title fee?
It depends on the state. Arkansas charges $10, Pennsylvania $50 and Illinois $165. Texas charges $28 or $33 depending on the county, and California lists a $15 transfer fee. The table above shows each state we cover.
Does registration cost the same amount every year?
Not always. Several states charge less as a vehicle ages, and a few base the fee on weight, horsepower or value rather than a flat rate. Your state page notes which applies.
Do I pay the title fee every time I register?
No. The title fee is a one-time charge when the car is titled in your name. Registration is the fee that repeats.
Can I register my car in a state with cheaper fees?
No. You must register where the vehicle is actually kept and you're a resident, not wherever registration happens to be cheapest. States actively check for this.
Are tax, title and license included in the out-the-door price?
Yes. All three are part of the out-the-door price, along with any dealer fee. See the out-the-door price calculator to add everything together.
