On a vehicle bought from a dealer, Illinois charges 6.25%, which is $1,562.50 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in, plus local taxes where you register the vehicle.

Those local taxes come from municipalities, counties and transit districts, so your combined rate is above 6.25%. The calculator asks for the part above 6.25%, and the state's Tax Rate Finder shows yours.

For a dealer purchase you can subtract the full value of a trade-in. A private-party purchase is different: it uses a separate vehicle use tax chart with no trade-in credit, and this calculator does not model it.

Illinois Car Title and Registration Fees

Illinois charges the Secretary of State's $165 title fee, with registration charged in addition. The listed renewal amount for standard passenger plates is $151, and personalized or vanity plates cost more, so use Advanced options if you have those.

How Illinois Car Sales Tax Is Calculated

    1. Confirm the car is coming from a dealer. These steps follow dealer-sale rules.
    2. Start with the price, then subtract the full value of your trade-in.
    3. Multiply the result by the state rate of 6.25%.
    4. Add the part of your local rate above 6.25% for the place where you register the vehicle.
    5. Add the $165 title fee, the $151 standard-plate registration fee and any dealer fee.

Vehicles bought from a registered dealer are taxed through the dealer's sales tax return. Private-party purchases use a different vehicle use tax chart with no trade-in credit, and this calculator does not model them.

Because the estimate follows dealer-sale rules, a car bought from a neighbor or an online seller is taxed differently and will not match the number above. We have not confirmed an Illinois dollar limit on dealer documentation fees, so check each line on the buyer's order. Read how a trade-in affects sales tax to see how Illinois compares. In Chicago or Cook County? The Illinois Department of Revenue says that if you live within the corporate limits of the City of Chicago or in Cook County, you may also owe additional tax to those jurisdictions, so include it in the local rate you enter.
