How this estimate was calculated

Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.

    What's in the out-the-door price

The price on the window is only where the bill starts. The out-the-door price adds sales tax, the title fee, registration, and the dealer's own documentation or processing fee, then subtracts your trade-in where your state allows it. What's left is the total you actually sign for.

    • Sales tax, at your state's rate plus any local tax, on the price after your trade-in where that applies.
    • Title fee, a one-time charge to put the car in your name.
    • Registration, sometimes called a license or tag fee, to drive it on public roads.
    • Dealer fee, a charge the dealer sets for paperwork, which some states cap or tax along with the price.

How to check a dealer's quote against this estimate

    1. Enter the price from your buyer's order, before any trade-in.
    2. Enter your trade-in allowance and choose your state and condition.
    3. Add the dealer fee exactly as it's printed on the quote.
    4. Compare the total here to the out-the-door number on the quote. A gap usually means an add-on, a different fee total, or a local tax rate that isn't entered.

A quote that's lower than this estimate isn't automatically wrong; it may just be missing a fee it hasn't itemized yet. A quote that's higher is worth asking about, line by line.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What does "out-the-door price" mean?

It's the total you pay to drive the car home: the negotiated price, plus sales tax, title, registration and the dealer's fee, minus your trade-in where it applies. See our guide on what an out-the-door price is for more detail.

Why doesn't my dealer's out-the-door number match this estimate?

The most common reasons are a local tax rate that isn't entered, an add-on or extended warranty rolled into the price, or a documentation fee that's different from what you entered. Ask the dealer for an itemized breakdown and compare it line by line.

Does the out-the-door price include extended warranties or add-ons?

Only if you include them in the price you enter. This calculator estimates tax and government fees on the vehicle itself; an extended warranty or paint protection package is a separate charge some dealers fold into the deal.

Is "out-the-door" the same as "drive-away" price?

Yes, they mean the same thing: the total cost to legally drive the vehicle away, with everything included.

Does this work for every state?

Yes. Choose your state above and the calculator applies that state's tax rate, trade-in rule, and the title and registration fees we've confirmed.
