How this estimate was calculated
Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.
Estimated New York Car Sales Tax
New York's state sales tax on a vehicle is 4%, or $1,000.00 on a $25,000 purchase with no trade-in, but the tax is charged at the rate where the buyer lives, which adds county and city tax to the state rate.
Publication 718 lists the total rate for each area. Enter the part above 4% in the calculator and it does the rest.
Tax is charged on the price after the trade-in credit, as long as the dealer will resell the trade-in.
New York Car Title and Registration Fees
The DMV's certificate of title fee is $50. Passenger registration is set by vehicle weight and some counties add a supplemental fee, so the total leaves registration out unless you enter it. The DMV's fee estimator can give you the amount.
| Fee | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Title certificate feeTitle | $50.00 | The DMV's fee for a certificate of title. |
| Registration feeRegistration | Varies | Passenger registration is set by vehicle weight, and some counties add a supplemental fee. Use the DMV's fee estimator, then enter your amount under Advanced options. |
| Dealer documentation feeSet by the dealer | Up to $175 | A New York dealer may charge up to $175 for preparing the paperwork, plus the actual title, registration and plate fees. |
How New York Car Sales Tax Is Calculated
- Start with the price on your invoice.
- Subtract the trade-in credit, if the dealer will resell the trade-in.
- Multiply the result by the state rate of 4%.
- Add the part of your area's total rate above 4%.
- Add the $50 title fee and any registration and dealer fees.
If you pay New York sales tax to the dealer, the DMV does not collect it again when you register the vehicle.
A New York dealer may charge up to $175 for preparing the paperwork, plus the actual title, registration and plate fees, so a documentation line above $175 is worth questioning. Enter the amount you are quoted in the dealer fee field. Read how a trade-in affects sales tax to see how New York compares.
