    What a title fee covers

    A title fee is what the state charges to issue or transfer the certificate of title. It is usually a small flat amount, and it is separate from sales tax and from registration. The dealer normally handles the paperwork, and you pay the fee as part of the deal.

    Deadlines matter. California, for example, expects transfer fees within 10 days of the sale, and Missouri lists a $25 penalty for each 30 days a title application is late, up to $200. Your state page lists the rules we have confirmed.

    Title fee versus title tax

    Do not confuse the two. The title fee is a flat administrative charge. In a few states the sales tax itself is collected when you apply for the title. The calculator above shows the tax and the fee on separate lines so you can see which is which.
