How this estimate was calculated
Estimates are for informational purposes only. Actual taxes and fees may vary based on your location, vehicle, transaction and current state rules.
Why registration is hard to estimate
Sales tax is a percentage of the price. Registration is different in every state: a flat fee in one place, a charge by horsepower or weight in another, and in some states a percentage of the vehicle's value. That is why this calculator lets you type in your own registration amount when we do not have a verified figure.
Registration is also different from the title. The title proves you own the car and is usually a one-time fee. Registration lets you drive it on public roads and repeats on a schedule. The table above shows how the states we cover set each one.
How to get an exact registration amount
- Use the state agency's own fee calculator when it has one. Each state page links to the agency we used.
- Ask the dealer for the estimated title and registration line on the buyer's order, and compare it with the state's published fee.
- Enter that amount under Advanced options so the total reflects it.
